SCRAPPY SOULS - SURF ART & LIFESTYLE
Hello,
I'm Mel Brown, Owner and Artist of Scrappy Souls.
I am a proud indigenous woman. I was born and bread on Guringai Country (the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia). My indigenous ancestors are the Muthi Muthi people of the Murray River/Balranald region of NSW (Madi Madi Country).
I spent my childhood at the beach and in the water and I have continued that lifestyle as an adult. As a surfer of 20+ years, I have a true love for the ocean and it's raw powerful beauty.
I handshape and use a variety of materials to create my artworks, this means that every piece has its own unique qualities and is perfectly imperfect.
I utilise recycled timber and materials from our amazing Northern Beaches tradies whereever possible, meaning less offcuts going to landfill! As an Indigeous person I feel a strong connection to country and caring for it is a part of who I am.
In creating my art, I use woodburing, painting and drawing techiniques to personalise and customise each piece. A lot of time and care is put into my work and I always aim to provide the highest quality product and work.
